Since our founding in 1973, Carnes-Miller Gear has built a legacy of precision gear manufacturing excellence from our 18,000-square-foot facility in Locust, NC. What began as a gear shaping and hobbing specialist has evolved into a comprehensive full-service job shop serving the most demanding sectors—aerospace, defense, medical, industrial, mining, transportation, construction, agricultural, and rail. Through five decades of economic challenges including energy crises, recessions, financial turmoil, and global pandemics, our commitment to reliability, expertise, and quality has never wavered. Our team brings extensive training in gear tooling, equipment operation, nomenclature, and tolerancing, allowing us to deliver custom solutions that meet exacting specifications while maintaining competitive pricing. We pride ourselves on being your trusted local source for precision gear manufacturing.
Gear cutting involves removing material to form gear teeth using specialized processes. At CMG, we primarily use hobbing (a continuous cutting process with a rotating hob) and shaping (a reciprocating cutter method) depending on gear geometry, diameter, face width, and feature proximity. The process selection depends on part attributes like internal vs. external gears, cutter clearance requirements, and whether the gear is part of a shaft assembly.
Our gear engineering team is ready to discuss your requirements and recommend the optimal manufacturing approach.
